— TIMELINE OF OUR HERITAGE —

  • 1700'S

    Late 1700s – Captain Joh Springer, an early maritime pioneer, sailed between the United States and Europe, laying the foundation for a legacy of transatlantic trade and exploration.

  • 1800'S

    1837 – Henning Biehl, father of Biehl & Co. founder Carl C. Biehl, is born in Flensburg, Germany, beginning the family legacy that would shape the future of the company.

  • 1905

    R.B. Wilkens and Carl C. Biehl form Wilkens & Biehl in Galveston, TX. The company was heavily involved in the export of cotton and cottonseed cake.

  • Early Years

    In 1919, Biehl & Co. opened its Houston office. After joining the firm in 1935 to assist his ailing father, Carl Biehl became a full partner in 1936 following Carl C. Biehl’s passing, continuing the family legacy.

  • 1940's

    In the mid-1940s, Carl Biehl became a member of the Houston Maritime Association and reopened Biehl & Co. with offices in Galveston and Houston. By 1947, the company expanded to New Orleans, establishing it as the new Head Office.

  • 1960's

    In 1966, John Springer joined Biehl & Co. as Assistant to the Executive Vice President, marking the start of his leadership journey within the company.

  • 1970's

    In 1972, Carl Biehl was honored as an Honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy. By 1977, John Springer was named President of Biehl & Co., ushering in a new era of leadership.

  • 1980's

    In 1987, Biehl & Co. mourned the passing of Carl Biehl, a key figure in its history. Two years later, in 1989, the company expanded its operations by acquiring Carolina Shipping Company, established in 1927.

  • 2000's

    In 2004, Thomas Springer joined Biehl & Co., bringing the next generation into the family business. By 2008, after celebrating the company’s Centennial Anniversary in 2005, he became Managing Director, continuing Biehl’s legacy of leadership.

  • 2024

    2024 – Biehl & Co. celebrates 120 years of service excellence, honoring its rich history and commitment to innovation in maritime services as it looks forward to the future.
